Mexico City is home to just over 150 museums

The list includes museums with history, science, art, culture, fun to be enjoyed.

Museums

Interactive Museum of Economy (MIDE):
  • Context and history. It is also an interactive museum, but focused on young people having a good financial education, learning while having fun. Initially, they began with the numismatic collection of the Bank of Mexico. After that, they show the importance of money, of good culture about it and how the value of the Mexican peso has changed over the years.
  • You will find inside. Interactive exhibitions where you can touch screens or move things in parts of the museum, showing you different infographics according to your interest in the queries. There are almost no temporary exhibitions.
  • How to arrive. It is located almost leaving the Allende subway station on line 2 (blue), at a station in the zocalo.
  • Cost. General admission 95 MXN/4.75 dls. Students $85 MXN/4.25 dls. If you want to create a ticket, it will cost you 20 MXN/1 USD.
  • Open: Tuesday to Sunday from 10 to 18.

Popular art museum:
  • Context and history. The museum in its history was built as a police and fire station almost one century ago, in a post-revolutionary Mexico. This building is influenced by Art Deco architecture, making it a building that stands out among the colonial buildings at the downtown.
  • You will find inside. The museum has a permanent exhibition on the art of Mexican traditions and representations from different parts of the country, which makes the museum a must-see if you want to learn more about one of the richest cultures in the world. Sometimes there are a couple of temporary exhibitions that are related to this Mexican folklore.
  • How to arrive. The museum is located a few blocks from the central alameda park, so you can get there by the trolleybus that leaves you at the next fine arts station or the Juarez metro or the metrobus on line 1 is also nearby.   • Cost. The cost is 60 MXN/3 dls. Sunday is free. Students is free.
  • Open: Tuesday to Sunday from 10 to 18.

  • Guided tours. They do art events or presentations in the mezzanine of the museum, so you should ask at the box office to schedule a tour in English.

Memory and Tolerance Museum:
  • Context and history. It is a museum that is located next to the Secretary of Foreign Relations. It is a museum that makes you think about the quality of humans and society that we are, recapitulating the horrors that we have committed as a species, talking about the holoquast, genocide, racism in different parts of the world, in an interactive way.
  • You will find inside.
    • A) Permanet exhibition. The exhibitions that are permanent are related to precisely such injustices, detailing the events so that you feel in those events and we do not make the same mistakes. You'll find:
      • i) German Holocaust during the Nazi empire
      • ii) Armenian Genocide
      • iii) The situation that Cambodia has been facing
      • iv) Displacement and genocide in Guatemala
      • v) Racism in Rwanda
      • vi) Division and catastrophic events in Yugoslavia
      • vii) Darfur
    • B) Temporary exhibitions. In the same way, they are exhibitions for us to be empathic as a society. The exhibition that I had to witness was related to the background and how we have exploited the planet, hence the importance of caring for the environment.
    • How to arrive. It is located three blocks from the Palacio de Bellas Artes, so the instructions on how to get to the site will help you.
    • Cost. For students the cost is 85 MXN/4.25 dls, for the general public it is 105 MXN/5.25 dls. With an audio guide (there is in English) it is 105 MXN/5.25 dls for students, 125 MXN/6.25 for the general public. The cost of temporary exhibitions is 30 MXN/1.5 dls for students and 50 MXN/2.5 dls for the general public. You can buy your tickets here, you can only buy general admission, audios and temporary exhibitions are purchased at the museum.

History Gallery Snail Museum:
  • Context and history. This project arose based on an idea of ​​the secretary of public education at that time, which will illustrate the most important moments in the history of Mexico in a simple and pleasant way, and in commemoration of the anniversaries of the Mexican Independence and Revolution.
  • You will find inside. It is a museum with a rather peculiar walk, which will show you a timeline from the independence of Mexico to a contemporary Mexico, with many models and representations that take you back to such historical events. At the end you will find an eagle that below has a copy of our last valid constitution.
  • How to arrive. It is 300 meters before reaching the Chapultepec castle, on a detour, so its information will help you.
  • Cost. 85 MXN/4.25 dollars. In fact, if you want to go to this museum as well and you don't have to go up and down, you will have to buy the admission to the castle of Chapultepec, which costs the same. If you need to store a backpack, food or clothes, there are lockers for 10 MXN/0.5 dls, but you must buy them before going up. Not online tickets.

Revolution museum:
  • Context and history. It is a museum that recounts everything that happened in this great event that happened in Mexico after having Porfirio Díaz in power for so many years, for which this armed conflict began due to the dissatisfaction of the Mexicans, in an internal war that happened in 1910 to approximately 1921, so this museum shows that event and life in Mexico afterward. The museum is located in the monument to the revolution.
  • You will find inside.
    • A) Museum. The museum hardly has temporary exhibitions, but they are obviously related to this event, so sometimes you will see landscape paintings that show the Mexico of that time. Regarding the permanent, you will see the clothing, weapons, documents, flags, maps of everything related to the armed conflict.
    • B) Viewpoint. This is external to the museum, but it is completely worth it, it is to see Mexico City from the 42 meter height of the monument. There is a cafeteria but it is not cheap.
    • How to arrive.
    • A) From Plaza de la República metrobus station. Walk like 5 minutes to the monument.
    • B) From Revolution subway station. Walk like 15 minutes.
    • Cost. The museum charges 38 MXN/2 dls for general public, 19 MXN/1 dls for students. On Sundays it is free. For the viewpoint they charge 120 MXN/6 dls or 100 MXN/5 dls for students. There are many packages but this is the most basic.

Tamayo Contemporary Art Museum:
  • Context and history. Initially, the museum was created to show the most representative paintings by Rufino Tamayo. Unlike Diego Rivera, Orozco and Siqueiros, he did not capture politics or nationalism, but rather Mexican traditions. Years ago I remember that many works by the painter were shown in this museum, now there are many temporary exhibitions of abstract art, but I have no doubt that they will return soon. Rufino was my countryman, we were born in the same state of Mexico.
  • You will find inside. In a similar way to the Jumex museum and the MUAC, this museum presents abstract art exhibitions, which have an everyday touch, which demonstrates the simplicity of how everyday objects or moments can become art. We are all artists.
  • How to arrive. Leaving Chapultepec subway station, you can walk a couple of minutes. Another option is to take metrobus line 7 and get off at Gandhi station.
  • Cost. 80 MXN / 4 dollars. Sundays is Free. International students and children under 12 years of age admission is free.
  • Open: Tuesday to Sunday from 10 to 18.

Papalote Children's Museum:
  • Context and history. It was born as a non-profit association so that children, teachers and parents can learn while they play. The enclosure has tiles that decorate its facade, being a Mexican icon.
  • You will find inside. It is a very interactive museum dedicated to children, who through games acquire knowledge, not as scientific as the universum, but super useful for their young age.
  • How to arrive. You will have to walk around 20 minutes leaving the Constituyentes subway station, towards Barranca del Muerto, and you will have to cross two pedestrian bridges, the second you will go up to the bridge and you will see one of the main avenues of the city, similar to a freeway.
  • Cost. 159 MXN/8 dollars from Tuesday to Thursday. 200 MXN/10 dls from Friday to Sunday. It depends on the package and the attractions are the cost. You can buy your tickets here(Note, it has to be the Chapultepec venue).
  • Open: Tuesday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
