University City is UNESCO not for isolated buildings but because mural becomes building: volcanic stone + mosaic + lava.

Story facts:

• Central Library has 4,000 m² of mosaics made with natural-color stones, no paint: each stone hand-picked in 1952.
• Siqueiros at the Rectory weighs 25 tons and was built for quakes: panels are separated by joints.
• Sculptural Space (1979) is 64 concrete prisms aligned with volcanoes: stand in the center and volcanoes frame perfectly.

Step-by-step (2.4 km, campus, wear sneakers):

1. Central Library / O’Gorman — see each side: pre-Hispanic (north), colonial (south), modern (west), university (east). 20 min.
2. Rectory / Siqueiros → MUAC — cross Las Islas lawn. Enter MUAC for contemporary art. 20 min.
3. Sculptural Space → Pedregal Reserve — walk among prisms and lava. Total silence 10 min from CU. 20 min.
4. Universum / UNAM Botanical Garden — close with cacti and CU views.

Easy context: CU was built in 1952 on Xitle lava (eruption 300 AD). Architects didn’t remove lava: they used it as floor and quarry. That’s why everything is black and mosaic.

Tip: Weekdays 11am–3pm. Fewer classes, more sun, museums (MUAC/Universum) open.
