Chimalistac — Stone Bridges & Canals

Chimalistac means “place of stones”: a 17th-century village that survived intact between Insurgentes and Revolución. It looks like a film set but families live there.

Story facts:

• Púlpito Bridge was built without a single nail: only compressed volcanic stone.
• Carmen Church has one tower only: the second was never finished for lack of money in 1840.
• The Magdalena River was tubed in 1940: the water sound you hear is storm drainage, not the river.

Step-by-step (1.8 km, cobblestone, daytime):

1. Paseo del Río / Púlpito Bridge — start at the stone arch. Touch the cold quarry. 10 min.
2. Carmen Church & Ex-Convent → San Sebastián Garden — pink quarry and lone bell tower. Sit on Talavera bench. 15 min.
3. Amargura St → Mystic Bridge — second, narrower bridge. See houses with hanging bougainvillea. 15 min.
4. Exit to Insurgentes / San Ángel — finish at San Jacinto Plaza (Saturday bazaar) or ice cream in Coyoacán. 20 min.

Easy context: Chimalistac was orchards feeding the Carmen convent. Each bridge crossed a canal. Today it’s the only place in CDMX where the 17th century remains inhabited, not musealized.

Tip: Sat 10am, combine with San Ángel Bazaar (10am–6pm) 5 min away.

How to get there from the Zócalo (safe) — San Ángel is off the main circuit, but worth it

Reference: Chimalistac/San Ángel is 11 km south of Zócalo. Not walkable, but a gem outside the hustle.

• Public transit (daytime, safe):

  1. Metro Line 3 (green) Zócalo → Zapata (20 min), then Metrobús Line 7 → Altavista (15 min), get off at Altavista and walk 8 min to Chimalistac via Paseo del Río (cobblestone, calm by day).
  2. Alternative: Metro Line 2 Zócalo → Viaducto → Metrobús Line 7 or Zapata–San Ángel bus (ask at the stop, daytime only).

• Uber/Didi (recommended, safest & direct): Request outside Metro Miguel Ángel de Quevedo (south exit, lit and with shops) to Plaza San Jacinto, San Ángel. $120–170 MXN from downtown (20–30 min no traffic). How to request well: enter the station, exit south, request there (not on the street), verify model/plates, share trip with your group and share location on WhatsApp. Avoid requesting in Chimalistac alleys.

• Time: 30–45 min total. For the return, request Uber from San Ángel Inn (well-known, safe) to your hotel.
